Free mammogram, clinical breast exam on women’s month

Adriano Staff reporter LAOAG CITY — In time for the International Women ’ s Month celebration, a white and pink van dubbed as “MAMMOvan” is going around the province to provide free mammogram and clinical breast examination for all women at risk of breast cancer. Parked at the back of the Provincial Capitol building on March 8, women aged 40 years old and above lined up to avail of this free service courtesy of the Breast Cancer Imperative (BRCAI) Inc., a non-government volunteer organization based in the province. Also, a free clinical breast examination is being administered for women aged 20 and above. Good for the month of March, organizers said Dr. Lestrino Baquiran and the Philippine Economic and Cultural Endowment (PEACE) funded this activity to promote breast cancer awareness and reduce late cancer detection. IT may be worthwhile to go through some verses in the first letter of St. Peter that describe to us how the Christian attitude should be toward suffering, especially a suffering that would appear to us as unjust. This unjust suffering is becoming common as the world is getting more and more complicated. We can suffer unjustly because of some rash judgments people can make, or because of exaggerated attachments to political opinions and social trends, or because of racial and even mere regional discrimination. We can suffer unjustly because of family problems that we cannot avoid and we are forced to resolve, like lingering and expensive sicknesses, drug addiction on the part of some family members, marital crises of relatives, bankruptcy, etc. We can suffer unjustly out of sheer malice of others, perhaps driven by envy, greed, lust for power, etc. This is not to mention the growing instances of suffering due to natural calamities and disasters for which we cannot pin do

  Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos awards MINC cards to PUJ and tricycle drivers Feb. 5, 2016 at the Ilocos Norte Capitol. T he Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte (PGIN) through the Metro Ilocos Norte Council (MINC) awarded membership cards to public utility jeepney (PUJ) and tricycle drivers at the Provincial Capitol Grounds. Awarding was held alongside the Philippine National Police (PNP) Awards and during Open Capitol Day, highlights of Ilocos Norte's 198 th Foundation Anniversary celebration. There are 2,111 cardholders and registered members of MINC at present. Tricycle drivers receive a P6 discount per liter of gasoline (maximum of five liters a day) at the MINC station; meanwhile, jeepney drivers get a P4 discount per liter of diesel (maximum of 30 liters a day). Ilocos Norte teams fall in 2016 RIAA meet

By Dominic B. dela Cruz Staff reporter ALL THREE teams from Ilocos Norte failed to win the overall championship in the recent Region I Athletic Association (RIAA) Meet held February 21-26 in San Carlos City, Pangasinan. Ilocos Norte, a perennial overall champion in recent RIAA meet, fell to fifth place with a medal haul of 27 gold, 42 silver and 55 bronze. The two other Ilocos Norte teams did not fare better. Batac landed eighth overall while Laoag placed lower at ninth. The Batac team won 18 gold, 21 silver and 13 bronze medals; Laoag, on the other hand, finished with 18 gold, 18 silver and 32 bronze medals. Pangasinan II emerged as overall champion, defending the crown it won last year with 70 gold, 46 silver and 43 bronze medals. Batac council passes P440M 2016 budget

By Dominic B. dela Cruz Staff reporter Batac City —The Sangguniang Panlungsod here unanimously passed the budget ordinance for 2016. The budget, totaling P440, 810, 610.68, was passed during a special session held on March 2. The said ordinance will still need approval from Batac Mayor Jeffrey Jubal Nalupta after which it would be transmitted to the Sangguniang Panlalawigan for review. With 2016 already three months old, the Batac government has been making do with a reenacted budget. The approved 2016 budget saw an increase of at least P33 million from last year’s budget. Last year’s budget was P407,689,319.80 During the budget deliberation, it was shown that the city government has achieved the biggest business tax collection with P27.2 million. The real property tax collection was pegged at P7.5 million. The total collection from local sources is P64,251,000.
