E-jeeps to ferry people around Laoag City

LAOAG CITY—Known as the center of renewable energy, the Ilocos Norte government is set to introduce at least 10 units of electric jeepneys to ferry selected passengers going around the central district of Laoag City.

June Arvin Gudoy, Communication and Media Office (CMO) chief said Wednesday the pilot project is meant to serve indigent students, senior citizens and pregnant women for free.

“We are hoping that by mid-June, we will be able to launch this project and help contribute clean air in the city of Laoag,” Mr. Gudoy said.

In support of Ilocos Norte’s campaign for renewable energy and clean air, Mr. Gudoy said the e-jeeps, which will be managed by the newly-created Metro Ilocos Norte Council (MINC) if proven feasible is expected to be replicated in the other towns and city of Ilocos Norte.

Mr. Gudoy clarified tricycle drivers and other public transport need not to worry that their livelihood will be affected by the presence of e-jeeps as its use is exclusive for pre-identified passengers entitled to free transport.

In 2011, school children identified as beneficiaries of the Ilocos Norte government’s Millennium Development Goals (MDG) localization program started to enjoy a fun ride hatid-sundo in going to school, as Sirib (Knowledge)buses fetched them in a common waiting area near their houses early in the morning and in the afternoon.

This will again continue during the opening of classes on June 1 to serve at least 28 primary and 14 secondary MDG schools in the province.

In previous years, the lack of transport allowance has been identified as one of the barriers why children cannot attend to school, thus contributing to the number of out of school youth here.

Pagudpud’s tourism transformer passes away

Ricardo Nolasco Jr., owner of Hannah’s Beach Resort and Convention Center in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte passed away on Wednesday evening, July 11, 2018.
