DepEd Laoag shines in 2015 NSPC

TAGUIG CITY—The Department of Education (DepEd) Division of Laoag City again proved its worth in the field of Campus Journalism as it garnered the most number of awards among the 13 divisions of Region I in the recently concluded National Schools Press Conference (NSPC) held April 13-17, 2015 in this city.

In the individual contest, Rodeline Domingo of MMSU-LHS won 7th Place in Photojournalism-Filipino-Secondary Level with Mr. James Ventura III as her coach.

In the Radio Broadcasting Contest, the English Category-Elementary Level bagged 3rd Place Over-all Best in Radio Script Writing and Broadcasting. Members of the team are Aldrin Sojourner Gamayon, Lucky Charm Arce, Myla Rosegem Mariano, Jonathan Ayala, Sofia Isabel Ablan, Nino Joshua Laureta, Danica Grace Agustin, and Ashlyne Root. The said team also garnered other special awards: Aldrin Sojourner Gamayon  and Lucky Charm Arce, won 1st  and 5th Place- Best Anchor respectively; 4th Place Best Infomercial, 6th Place Best News Script and  Nino Joshua Laureta – won 7th Place- Best in Technical Application. They were coached by Ms. Carolyn Aguada and Mr. Mark Anthony Juan.

Likewise, the secondary level-Filipino Category Team from Ilocos Norte College of Arts and Trades (INCAT) pocketed 5th Place-Over-all Best in Radio Production. The group was composed of John Carlo Garcia, Star Eve Agustin, Joshua Agliam, Minette Agbayani, Kristine Bonoan, Jelica Llanilo and Christian Loiuse Tiu. They also received the other special awards: John Carlo Garcia and Minette Agbayani won 2nd and 3rd Place respectively as Best Anchor, 4th Place Best Script and 5th Place Best Infomercial. The said team was trained by Mr. Jacinto B. Pascua and Bryan Ecija.

Meanwhile, the Expanded Collaborative Online Publishing Team-Filipino Category-Secondary Level landed 3rd Place. Members of the group from INCAT and SCA were Kenneth John Cruz, Anthony Joseph Duyao, Dave Bautista, Alixson dela Pena, Rustica Bacudio, Michael Agustin, Carla Batoon, Blessie Joy Padaca, Marsha Angela Manuel, Cinnie Mae Fuerte, Loudette Franz Tagaban, Alea Dell Rentegrado and Olive Charm Batara.  Mr. Mark Joseph Pastor, Mr. Mark Ronan Domingo and Mr. Joseph Ramos were the coaches. Also, Vince Therese Torqueza of MMSU-LES, member of the elementary group with the same category won 3rd Place.

In the other hand, three school papers from the Division of Laoag City were adjudged as Best Section winners. The MMSU’s ABC-English Edition of MMSU-LES won 3rd Place-Best in Sports Page and 4th Place-Best in Science and Technology Page, The Toiler of Buttong Elementary School and ‘Ang Pagsikat ‘of R.B. Ablan Elementary School won 3rd Place and 4th Place-Best in Science and Technology Page respectively .

Also, Mr. General M. Valdez and Aldrin Sojourner Gamayon both from MMSU-Les were awarded as Most Outstanding School Paper adviser and Most Outstanding Journalist of the Philippines respectively.

Moreover, Denise Nicole Miguel of Apaya Elementary School and Marc JC Pascual of Laoag Central Elementary School were elected Vice-President for Luzon and Board of Director respectively of the Philippine Editor’s Guild. Mrs. Myda Leah Estabillo and Mrs. Athelyn Sampayan are their adviser. From the secondary level, Jason Pascual and Chloe Maeve Domingo both from INCAT were elected also Vice-President for Luzon and Board of Director.

Several DepEd officials headed by Dr. Cecilia Pacis Aribuabo, Schools Division Superintendent   presented the winners to the City Government officials and employees led by Laoag Mayor Chevylle V. Farinas during a flag raising ceremony on April 27, 2015.

Dr. Mariecon Ramirez, Mrs. Gladys Domingo, Education Program Supervisors and in-charge of Campus Journalism, Mr. Joel Remigio and Mr. Jacinto Pascua, Division Campus Journalism Coordinators headed the Laoag City delegation in the NSPC. The said conference is an annual culmination program of the Department of Education as embodied in the R.A 7079 otherwise known as Campus Journalism Act of 1991. This is being participated among the 17 regions in the Philippines.


Based on records file, the Division of Laoag City won national awards for the past ten years and Regional Champion for the past three years.

Pagudpud’s tourism transformer passes away

Ricardo Nolasco Jr., owner of Hannah’s Beach Resort and Convention Center in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte passed away on Wednesday evening, July 11, 2018.
