By Paulina P. Nebrida

There is a bright outlook for information technology (IT),  nursing, and business-related graduates and students in Northern Luzon to pursue careers in IT-Business Process Management (IT-BPM) previously known as Business Process Outsourcing. This is what was trumpeted in the ICT Congress held on February 23-24, 2015 at the Oasis Country Resort and Hotel in San Fernando City, La Union.

Executive Director Monchito Ibrahim of the Information and Communication Technology Office of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-ICTO) declared that the IT-BPM industry is projecting to employ 1.3 million jobs up to 2016 with 526,000 coming from the countryside.

“The IT-BPM operation has started to locate in the next wave cities or the ICT hubs outside Metro Manila, creating economic activities in the countryside. In Northern Luzon, several locators are already in Baguio City. Two IT-BPM players, Accenture and Expert Global Solutions, will soon open its facilities in Laoag City and San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte, respectively. San Fernando City, La Union, through the Poro Point Development Corporation, and Lingayen, Pangasinan may follow suit”, Mr. Ibrahim said.

During the talks, industry leaders said that the “Contact Centers” still remain the leading service of IT-BPM industry. However, they are stepping up the value-chain in IT services and products. These include animation, game development, software development, and healthcare information management providing career opportunities to IT, nursing and finance graduates, among others.

“Animation has expanded beyond TV and movie” Mr. Rene Misa, President of Central Luzon School of Animation, said.  “We love anime, visual and special effects in movies,   in websites, commercials, logo animation, mobile apps, etc.”

In healthcare information management, nursing and allied medical professionals can find work as medical transcriptionist, medical secretaries, medical assistants, medical coders, medical representatives, and clinical research associates.

“There are many opportunities in the IT-BPM industry and those who are interested to join it must improve their talent and skills,” Eckhon Malig, IT Academe Officer of the IT Business Process Association of the Philippines said.

Currently, some training or skills improvement can be obtained from the following: eTESDA, eSMP at Open University, University of the Philippines, and by the training offered by the Healthcare Information Management Outsourcing Association of the Philippines (HIMOAP), Animation Council of the Philippines (ACPI), and the Philippine Software Industry Association (PSIA).

Enthusiastic young people, let’s get it on!
