The Department and Science and Technology Region 1 (DOST 1) joins the 2015 National Women’s Month Celebration through a two-day productivity training on baking, sushi making and soap making for DOST 1 staff, DOST-assisted firms and housewives in La Union with the theme, “Juana, Desisyon Mo ay Mahalaga sa Kinabukasan ng Bawat Isa, Ikaw Na!”

The observance of the Month of March as Women’s Role in History is mandated by Proclamation No. 227 series of 1988.

The celebration commenced on March 16, 2015 with a bouncy performance of the Juana, Ikaw na ang Manguna Dance Song led by the DOST 1 Juanas. It was followed by the Baking 101 demonstrated by a group of pastry chefs and bakers from Achievers Food and Bakery Ingredients Corporation of Balintawak, Quezon City. The group taught the participants the procedures in making different breads and pastries like pandesal with malunggay leaves, combination donuts, pandan and chocolate cake, brownies and chocolate crinkles.

The second day was packed with trainings on soap making and sushi making. Blessed Home Products of Ballay, Bauang, La Union taught the participants in making detergent powder, dishwashing liquid and fabric conditioner, while Ms. Maria Estela C. Chico of the DOST 1 Regional Standards and Testing Laboratory (RSTL) shared her knowledge in preparing sushi, a Japanese food that consists of rice with vinegar combined with seafoods, cucumber, carrots and other ingredients.

Overall, the activities opened a chance for the participants especially for the Juanas not only to unwind from their hectic lifestyle but most importantly to discover new skills for them to practice and utilize for their own living.
