OFW Family from Ilocos Sur wins OWWA Special Award

The National Awarding for the most awaited 2014 Model OFW Family of the Year Award (MOFYA) took place last January 23, 2015 at the Blue Leaf Filipinas, ParaƱaque City.

The families of Bartolome C. Cadavero of Puerto Princesa, Palawan and Fe S. Lao of Bansalan, Davao del Sur were hailed as national winners of the 2014 MOFYA in the sea-based and land-based categories respectively. Both families received P500, 000 cash prize, trophies and appliances.

On the other hand, Special Awards on Community Projects and Entrepreneurship were also conferred to deserving OFW families. The Best in Community Project Award was bestowed to Engineer Isidro M. Cabantac of Sta. Maria, Ilocos Sur while the Best in Entrepreneurship Award was given to Capt. Juan M. Cope of Region V. Both received P100,000 cash prize and a Plaque of Recognition.

Engineer Isidro M. Cabantac and Family was dubbed as the Model OFW Family for Technological Advancement in Agriculture during the MOFYA Regional Awarding. Engineer Cabantac received numerous awards from both public and private organizations for his projects in the field of agriculture including being an accredited Seed Grower of Rice and Corn in Ilocos Sur, being a nominee for Outstanding Corn Producer and the Farmer Scientist Award from the Department of Agriculture (DA).

With his ardent desire to improve the plight of farmers and farming, Engineer Cabantac engaged in seminars, trainings and personal studies and research in the field of Agriculture and applied his knowledge setting a trend in his hometown which is now gaining recognition in the field of Agriculture. He was a delegate for a scientific visit to the International Crop Research Institute for Semi- Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) in India.

Having been elected as a Sangguniang Bayan Member in his hometown, he initiated Resolutions on the Improvement of Agriculture in their locality. Some of which are the Resolution for the Acquisition of the Post- Harvest Facility for Food Grade Corn which is a pilot project entire the Philippines, the acquisition of Tramline (cable car) in Sta. Maria for easier transport of agricultural products, the Amendment of the Counterpart Sharing for the Recipients of Farm Equipment from 50-50 to 85(from the government) - 15 (from the farmer).

He also spearheaded the construction of farm-to-market roads, spillways, and acquisition of a Village type Mechanical Dryer in Barangay Ag-agrao, Sta. Maria, Ilocos Sur.

Engineer Cabantac’s agricultural innovations have certainly benefited the community making him worthy of the Best in Community Projects Award.

MOFYA is on its 10th year of giving recognition to outstanding OFWs and their families who have demonstrated financial stability, steady and enduring family ties, outstanding community service and success in business ventures. (OWWA RWO1)
