Noralyn Fernandez Sacoco, a 20-year old graduate of Data Center College of the Philippines topped the elementary level exams with a score of 89.40 percent.

Aside from Ms. Sacoco, another Ilocos Norte native also placed ninth in the LET rankings. Ivy Dancel Rosete, a Mariano Marcos State University scored 87.60.

The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) and Board for Professional Teachers announced on Oct. 27 that 25,301 elementary teachers out of 70,786 examinees, or 35.74%; and 26,767 secondary teachers out of 77,803 examinees, or 34.40% passed the LET given on August 17.

The 21,649 elementary teacher passers and 23,820 secondary teacher passers are first timers, according to the PRC.

Born to a poor farming family at Brgy. Nambaran in Bacarra, Ilocos Norte, Ms. Sacoco said she was inspired by her family with six growing children to pursue her studies and finish her degree.

Since elementary grade, she said she always wanted to become a teacher.

As a provincial government scholar since 2010, Ms. Sacoco proves poverty is not a hindrance to success.

“If you have a dream, do something to achieve it. There are a lot of scholarship opportunities out there. If not because of my scholarship, I may have not been into college,” she said.

Proud of Ms. Sacoco, the Data Center College of Laoag immediately offered a teaching position for her while waiting for the right opportunity to apply in a public school.
