DPWH now closely monitoring bridges’ construction

San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte—After receiving reports that the ongoing construction of bridges in Ilocos Norte’s second district has slowed down, Engr. Mathias Malenab said they will now be closely monitoring the bridges’ construction in this town as well as in Batac City.

Mr. Malenab, the Dept. of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) second district engineer, said in an interview that there were reports that reached them wherein only few workers have been working on the bridges.

The report, he disclosed, specifically mentioned the Nagbibingcaan Bridge in Batac.

In view of this, Mr. Malenab said they have reminded the contractors of the scheduled completion of the project.

The district engineer however stressed that in terms of accomplishments, the bridge construction in on track with the completion date. But he also urged the contractors to speed up the construction since it is now the rainy season and an overflow of the river would delay the project.

Mr. Malenab also said that all is in place for the bridge construction and they now only need additional steel for the girdle.

He stated further that the DPWH gives extensions or suspensions to projects provided there is a valid reason.

As a district engineer, he is allowed to grant a 30-day suspension due to bad weather condition.

To be realistic, Mr. Malenab said the Nagbibingcaan Bridge will be completed by December of this year.

As for the Tabug Bridge, also located in Batac, Mr. Malenab said they expect this to be open to motorists by Nov. 1.

In a related development, Mr. Malenab announced that next year, they would be implementing road widening projects in Badoc, Currimao and parts of Batac City.

He also announced the designation of an acting assistant district engineer for the second district in the person of Engr. Jose Jinete Jr. Mr. Jinete is formerly an assistant district engineer and maintenance section chief in San Fernando, La Union

Mr. Malenab’s former assistant district engineer, Emil Ganaden, was promoted as district engineer of La Union’s first Engineering District.

Mr. Malenab expects that with a new acting assistant engineer, there will be a smooth flow of work relationship in order to meet the targets, vision and missions of the department.
