Currimao, Ilocos Norte—In celebration of the International Coastal Cleanup Day, the local government unit of Currimao and the Mariano Marcos State University conducted a coastal and underwater cleanup on September 26 along the Currimao bay.

Every year, coastal residents and student volunteers look forward to this event as a way of instilling public awareness for cleaner oceans and waterways.

Pursuant to Proclamation No. 470, series of 2003, the annual clean-up is held annually every September 21.

However, due to recent typhoon “Mario” [Fung wong] that battered Ilocos Norte, the activity was postponed on Sept. 26.

Specifically, the simultaneous worldwide activity aims to remove marine debris from the shores, waters and underwater and waterways and to continue educating concerned stakeholders on the importance of a clean, healthy and sustainable marine environment and to enhance community awareness on the extent of marine debris crisis and its impact on people and environment.

Employees of the Currimao government along with hundreds of students from the College of Aquatic Sciences and Applied Technology, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, Economics, and Accountancy and College of Agriculture, Food and Sustainable Development will be diving into the bottom of the ocean and collecting marine debris at the Currimao bay as early as 7:00 a.m.

PIDS expert says income tax cuts justified; warns gov’t of revenue loss

Proposals to amend the personal income tax schedule appear to be well-justified.
