Laoag City—The city government here is urging local business establishments to help in the promotion of the city’s tourism industry.

To speed up this process, the Sangguniang Panlungsod recently passed a resolution requesting establishments to also display shirts with the printed name of the city or any other landmark in the city.

Laoag councilor Joseph H. Tamayo, sponsor of the measure, said that the shirts he usually sees being worn in the city are printed with the names of the country’s different cities or features their prime tourism destinations.

He then said he decided to craft the resolution to urge local businesses to also print display shirts that feature Laoag.

Mr. Tamayo also enjoined the public to create unique designs for the city’s tourist spots as a means to attract domestic and foreign tourists.

He added that this will also promote the city whenever and wherever these shirts are worn.

Mr. Tamayo disclosed further that only a few establishments in the city offer such shirts and tourists, especially foreigners, are having a hard time finding shirts to buy.

Meanwhile, Laoag Mayor Chevylle V. Fariñas welcomed the resolution as she said this is another way to promote the city.

The city government is also studying where to put up a permanent “Pasalubong Center” in the city.

Presently, two centers have been put up by the city, at the Aurora Park and at the Laoag City Commercial Center.

The “Pasalubong Center” will be included in the planned “Empanada Center” to which the mayor is hopeful would be realized next year if funds for the project becomes available.

PIDS expert says income tax cuts justified; warns gov’t of revenue loss

Proposals to amend the personal income tax schedule appear to be well-justified. However, these proposals should include measures that will allow government to recover the revenue loss from lower income taxes. Dr. Rosario Manasan, senior research fellow of state think-tank Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), said at a seminar sponsored by the Philippine Senate, that government should look for new revenue measures to compensate for the projected revenue loss that will arise as a result of the implementation of any of the various proposals to restructure the personal income tax. Currently, there are several income tax reform proposals pending in both houses of Congress. All of them, according to Dr. Manasan, have the same objective of addressing the phenomenon of bracket creep, which results from “non-indexation to inflation of personal income tax brackets”.
