LC suffers P2.7M in agri damages from Vinta

Laoag City suffered P2.7 million in agricultural damages according to city agriculturist Oscar Recta.

Broken down, damages on crops were worth P 2,523,175 while fishery took P215,600 in damages,

Recta also said that 22 pieces of galvanized iron sheets were blown away by typhoon Vinta at the city’s breeding station as he added that this needs an immediate rehabilitation.

Assistant city engineer Fred Agpaoa, for his part said there were no major infrastructure damages in the city.

However, Agpaoa said that some roofing materials in front of the Laoag City General Hospital (LCGH) and at the Central Terminal were also blown away by the strong winds.

The City Hall new building also experienced the same devastation as three doors at the SP office at the southern part were destroyed due to the strong winds. Some of the office equipment of the councilors were also blown away.

Agpaoa added that the engineering team has visited Barangay Gabu wherein some private residences were reported to be damaged.

As of press time, Agpaoa said that his office is still collating the total infrastructure damages brought out by the typhoon as the team could not yet enter the different schools because they were still closed after the typhoon. He said they would inspect them once classes restart.

During the height of the typhoon, Agpaoa related that his team was busy in the clearing operation of the different main roads particularly at the Laoag-Airport road, Laoag-Suba road, Laoag-Sarrat road, Vintar road and some barangay roads.

Disaster management chairman Melvin Manuel meanwhile reported that his team is still conducting post disaster efforts to the affected barangays that needs rehabilitation.

Laoag mayor Chevylle V. Fariñas said the city was still lucky in the sense that most of the damages were only fallen trees though there were minor infrastructure damages as well as agricultural damages.

The mayor thanked all barangay officials and residents who extended their cooperation for the clearing operations in their respective barangays.

Relative to this, the mayor appealed to the public to refrain from calling the City Hall asking for emergency response if there is no real emergency.

She stressed that the public should be responsible especially during calamities as this is not a game and there may be other people who would have really needed emergency response.
